CAPTAIN CHICKEN WROTE:

Question-Comment: In revelation chapter 10 verse 2-4 what are the 7 thunders and why doesn’t the angel allow him to write them?

DON WROTE:

Dear Captain chicken:

Thanks for your interest in our site. Let’s look first at the context of the verse you have in question.

Revelation 10:1-7

And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire:

And he had in his hand a little book open: and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth,

And cried with a loud voice, as when a lion roareth: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices.

And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven,

And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven, and the things that therein are, and the earth, and the things that therein are, and the sea, and the things which are therein, that there should be time no longer:

But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets

Now, let’s examine the verse itself. "And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not." The prophetic terms/words in this verse are, seven, thunders, voices, and seal up.

  • Seven throughout the Scriptures is used to indicate final, fullness or completeness.
  • Thunder(s) depicts God having His say in judgment. It seems that the term is always used prophetically and that it is always associated with judgment upon Israel or upon Israel's enemies.
  • Voices are linked to times of judgment.
  • Seal up is a term the Bible uses when something/sometime in the future is alluded to but God withholds the particulars.

(For your own personal study of these terms, go to the Bible Treasure Chest on our home page and click on the treasure chest. Then click on the Bible Gateway icon…type the word/term in the box under "Word search" and click the "go" button or hit "enter" on your keyboard..)

From its context we know this verse has to do with the last 3½ years of Daniel’s Seventy Weeks (See Clock of the Ages, booklet one, chapter three.), so we can place the happenings at the end of the Kingdom Age (See the Study Chart of the Ages). This agrees with the "seven thunders"; i.e., it is God’s final judgment of the inhabitants of the earth. This is not the only place where the one receiving the prophetic word from the Holy Spirit is told to "seal up" something from those of a later date. (See Daniel 9:24 and 12:4.) This is not an unusual practice, for God rarely encumbers His Church with the particulars of things that do not concern them. That’s why He told Daniel to seal up the book until the time of the end. Oh, the church throughout the age has had a fairly accurate overview of end-time prophecy; but for the most part, the particulars are reserved for those who must go through the things prophesied. And as to the things prophesied for the Kingdom Age and its end, we need to remember that Christ Jesus, the WORD Himself, will be here during the Kingdom Age; and He’ll enlighten those who should be enlightened.

I hope this sheds some light. Thanks again for WRAPPING with us.

Maranatha,

Don Love
